Individual Note: employed in 1887 both as caretaker and 'operator' at the Working Men's College, his duties including the making of fittings, models and apparatus for the college, his pay 30s a week in addition to 'quarters, light and water'. Subsequently his son Alfred took over cleaning duties 'and, with the erection of new buildings in 1890, Nelson became 'caretaker and storekeeper' at £100 a year and quarters. In 1891 Nelson was warned to be more courteous to the students of the Debating Society. In 1896 his young son George was being paid 5s a week to assist the college engine driver. John Nelson was retired at the end of 1899 on a pension of 12s 6d a week for 'long and faithful service', his son Alfred replacing him as caretaker from 1900 to 1920.

Individual Note: bought "The Old Brigade Hotel" in Carlton as he thought Carlton would become the capital of Victoria. As it didn't and as he didn't like raising his children there he sold the hotel.
