A secret marriage was arranged between Lena and Harry Adsetts of Rotherham for 10th August 1935 but her father found out and blocked it when he learned of her pregnancy.

Lena married a Czech, Sam Svoboda who was stationed here in England. After World War II she went to live in Czechoslovakia. She managed to get on the last British plane to leave Czechoslovakia before the iron curtain came down and returned to Rotherham. Sam joined her about 3 years later after escaping from Czechoslovakia.

Her marriage to Sam Svoboda was later dissolved and she went out to Southern Rhodesia to join her sister Stella.

Joseph and Eva spent their honeymoon in Long-Jetty - they then returned to Wollongong near Sydney where he was appointed to the Nimbin Methodist Circuit as a Home Missionary on the 1st April 1953.

(Write-up from an Australian Newspaper - 'At last, Joe is recognised'. After more than 50 years, Adelong resident Joe Pocklington has received acknowledgement for his work during World War II. Mr. Pocklington was a member of the British Merchant Navy, a civilian organisation which was instrumental in ensuring cargo was transported to both war zones and the home counties. Despite being a civilian, wartime action was still very much an integral part of Mr. Pocklinton's life during that time. ' Most of the action happended at night', he said. 'There would be some 40 to 60 ships in a convoy, six lines across and 10 in a column'. ' You'd go to bed of a night and in the morning wake up and see the gaps where boats had been'. 'They were taken out during the night'. Despite the threats of the German U-boats and the unpredicatable nature of life at sea, Mr. Pocklington recalls only one time when he was truly scared.
'We were in Anzio, in Italy,' he said. 'That's the only place I was scared'. 'It was a violent battle'. 'I was also at Saint Raphael, in southern France, when the German's pulled back'. 'At the end of the war, we were steaming into Malaya when the nuclear bomb was dropped'. 'We didn't know what the Japanese reaction was going to be, but we discharged our cargo as if it were peace time'. Born in Sunderland, England, Mr. Pocklington had his first taste of Australia during his merchant navy days. 'We had a bad captain', Mr. Pocklington said. 'Most people complained about him each time we went to shore'. So,. the young sailor decided to take matters into his own hands. He jumped ship at Whyalla. 'I know what it is like to be an illegal immigrant', he said. 'Immigration found me after three months and I had a choice - go home willingly or be deported'. The choice to go home willingly was obviously a good one. After spending some harrowing days trading between Finland and London, Mr. Pocklington decided to go to Australia House and find out about emigrating legally. 'I told them about my history with Australia and they told me if I wanted to go back I'd be alright because I won't be a whinging Pom', he said. )

The family have a photograph of Joseph proudly wearing his 6 medals that he was awarded for service during World War II.
