Purchased and resided at Winthorpe Hall, Notts.

The bank of Pocklington & Dickinson went bankrupt and the legalities were long and drawn out over a period of years.

Became known in Keswick as " King Pocky"

He attended Wakefield School
Went to Jesus College, Cambridge University

Worked for the family Banking Business until 26yrs. when a legacy enabled him to become a Country Squire of 2 Manors. (? that he was a Banker)

    A Coat of Arms - possibly granted or applied for in 1761 ?

When weather allowed preferred to horse back ride rather than use his Carriage
Loved to build and design properties
Did a lot of building including Follies

A Regatta Man for 10 yrs. - 1st one held in 1781 at Derwent Island at Keswick
Helped to put Keswick on the Tourist Map
Was one of the first outsiders to the area to wish to build a home and live there, which he did for each summer, spending the winters in Notts
Was Lordship of Ashness
Benevolent to the poor
Unmarried
Put a ladder against the Bowder Stone for people to gain a good view of the area
Contrived water to form a Cascade Waterfall.
Built 3 Derwentwater Houses - Island House, Barrow Cascade House and one at Portiscale.
Wrote a Book , entitled - Book of Rides ( Summer Travels 1768 - 1776)

A snippet of information - possibly taken from a local newspaper, reads 'Last Week', '4th April 1778, Joseph Pocklington, Esq., arrived at Keswick, from Yorkshire, who has lately purchased an Island, in the Lake near that place, commonly called Vicar's Island, upon which he is going to build and plant. The bells of Crosthwaite Church, rung a peal upon his arrival.'
