Made a Knight of the Bath at the Coronation of King Charles I.
Elevated to the Peerage on 29th July 1643, as Baron Hatton of Kirby in the county of Northampton.
Upon the Restoration of King Charles II, his lordship was sworn of the Privy Council, and constituted Governor of Guernsey.

Advanced in 1682 to the title of Viscount Hatton of Gretton in the county of Northampton.

Escaped death at Cornet Castle when a magazine of powder caught fire at midnight by lightening - he was blown out of his bedroom window, struggled on the ramparts without injury. But his wife and others perished leaving one surviving child, found the next day in its cradle asleep, under a beam.
