Living with him at time were his daughter, Ann (Pocklington) Johnson, age 38, and her two children, Mary Ann, age 11, and James, age 8, (she lived with her father after leaving her husband, Charles Johnson) and a Thoroton Pocklington, a farmer's son, age 17, born at Woodboro', Nottinghamshire (GB - I think this was Roger's son's (John's) boy - so would be Roger's grandson. The age is right.)

Christening: Date: 14 JUL 1782
Place: Kinoulton, Notts, Eng
Burial: Date: 3 OCT 1856
Place: All Saints Churchyard, Vange, Essex
Individual Note: He came from Kinoulton in Nottinghamshire to Vange in Essex in 1827. ( He was in his mid years)
He farmed at Vange Hall and at Horndon-on-the-Hill in Essex up to his death in 1856.
He was a Church Warden, Overseer and Surveyor of the Highways.
In 1827 Thomas agreed to take one Joseph Marsh at 2/6p per week and clothe him.
Vange Hall was one of the principle Seats of Essex.
A Farm Account Book detailing expenses, animal cures, parish accounts, hirings and even a ballad was kept by the family from circa 1773 to 1852. This Farm Account Book is part of the Archives of the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford. I must add the old Farm Account Book has within its pages a bit of romance in the form of an entry by Thomas' father Thoroton when he says in the list of hirings " the lovely Ann Bonsor" , who he wed a few years later.
The local All Saints Church, now sadly derelict, is home to the family burial plot .
Permission was granted by the Diocese for Redundant Churches at Chelmsford for Thomas' 3 x Gt. Grandson, Doug King, to remove a rectangular headstone that was found laying among debris and foliage in the vandalised churchyard.
Thomas' Memorial Inscription says:-
" IN MEMORY OF
THOMAS POCKLINGTON
LATE OF VANGE HALL
IN THIS PARISH
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
SEPTEMBER THE 27 1856
AGED 74 YEARS
WHO FOR THE CANDOUR OF HIS
MIND AND THE INTEGRITY OF
HIS HEART WAS RESPECTED BY
ALL WHO NEW HIM
ALSO MARY
WIFE OF THE ABOVE
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
OCTOBER THE 26 1861
AGED 72 YEARS........."
(... notes from the MIs fiche comments - Rectangular headstone leaning against church wall. Not found in 1999. Large stepped base of a chest tomb with a lid resting upon it. The sides of the tomb are missing, but it is possible that a stone leaning against the church was part of it.)
(My description of it (2006) - Stepped square base with tall 4 sided structure at its centre with a shaped top. The tall structure has broken away leaving only the base and shaped top. One of the sides of the structure had the MIs wording on, which we have in our possession.)
(From the visit in 2006 we noticed a plaque affixed to the church wall advising - that the church has been refurbished and is now used for some services.)

(Re: the estate of Vange, Essex. From the Essex Visitations of 1634 - (Pedigree Smith No: 2) Charles Smith, of Barking, Essex, Esq. who died 1761 (he being a member of the younger branch of the Dorsetshire family of that name) acquired the estate by his marriage to daughter and co-heir of Captain Marriner. (Vange therefore being held by the Mariner family, followed by the Smith family - to be purchased at some stage by Joseph Pocklington) Thomas came (as said above) in 1827 and his descendants continued until the 1880s........... It is thought that Vange Hall was built in the 1600s, and if this proves to be so, it could well have been built by the Marriner family)
(Re: Essex Record Office bundle Ref D/Dsd/T41 Deeds of Vange Hall - Will of George Colebrook of Woodlands, Lyndhurst, Southampton, eldest son and heir of Sir George Colebrook, dated 29th February 1808 and proved 20th May 1809 (presumably of Vange Hall) puts the Colebrook family there around that time or owners of)
