From Hart's Army Lists =
For the Victorian and Edwardian periods a more useful resource might be Hart's Army List, particularly as it includes short accounts of officers' war services. Lieutenant General Henry Hart started an unofficial Army list in February 1839, in part to fulfil the need for a record of officers' war services which he felt were inadequarely covered in the official Army List. Hart's Army Lists cover the period between 1839 and 1915 and were issued quarterly. Of particular value are the detailed footnotes giving the active service details and compaign awards for each officer although, as much of the information was provided by the subjects themsleves, it should be treated with care. As an example of this is a rather self-glorifying biographical entry for Major Gonville Bromhead (who was played by the actor Michael Caine in the film Zulu) in editions published in the 1880s which reads:
Major Gonville Bromhead served in the Zulu War of 1879 with the 24th Regiment, and took part as second in command in the gallant and successful defence of Rorke's Drift (mentioned in despatches, brevet major, Victoria Cross, medal with Clasp); together with Lieut J.R.M. Chard, Royal Engineers, was awarded the VC for their gallant conduct at the defence of Rorke's Drift on the occasion of the attack by the Zulus on the 22nd and 23rd January 1879. The Lieutenant General commanding the troops reports that, had it not been for the fine example and excellent behavioour of these two officers under the most trying circumstances the defence of Rorke's Drift Post would not have been conducted with that intelligence and tenacity which so essentially characterised it. The Lieutenant General adds that its success must, in a great degree be attributed to the two young officers who exercised the chief command on the occasion in question.
