History of Exeter College, Oxford =
In 1824 Exeter was at the head of the river in the famour White Boat, of which there is a picture. The boats at that time were crowded into Iffley Lock and got away in regular order, thus allowing each in turn a considerable start. There were only tree boats on the river that year, Christ Church, Brasenose and Exeter. Exeter bumped Brasenose the first night, and Christ Church took off. The crew were J.T. Wareing, W.D. Dick, S. Parr, Douglas (? Thomas Douglass), J.C. Clutterbuck (fellow 1822), J.G. Cole (fellow 1825), ROGER POCKLINGTON, stroke, H.B. Bulteel (fellow 1823). The coxswain was JOE POCKLINGTON (who took the name SENHOUSE). Outriggers were not yet invented, and the men rowed in tall hats. The stroke's son and the coxswain's son were both afterward strokes of the University Eight.

Netherhall, formerly Alneburgh Hall, is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Ellen (anciently Alne), which falls into the Solway about a mile below the house. At its mouth are the harbour and town of Maryport, and on the high ground near the town is a Roman Station, in and near which many altars and other Roman remains have been dug up at different times, and are now preserved in the portico at Netherhall.

The house originally consisted of a tower only, with walls nine feet thick, and of unknown but very ancient date. This tower has been added to by its various possessors from time to time, and it is now a comfortable family residence, and contains some spacious rooms and an excellent library.

The manor and estate formerly belonged the Eglesfields, but passed in 1528, by the marriage of the heiress of that ancient family to the Senhouses, in whose possession it has since remained.

The ancient family of Senhouse, otherwise spelled, in former times, De Sewynhouse, and De Sevenhouse, derives from (the first on record) Walter De Sewynhouse, from whom descended John Senhouse, Esq., living in the beginning of the sixteenth century. It ended in an heiress, as above mentioned, i.e. Elizabeth who married Joseph Pocklington, who in 1842 assumed her surname in addition to his own by Royal License
