He was educated at Harrow School. He gained the rank of officer in 18 53 in the service of the Grenadier Guards, and the rank of Lieutenant-Colo nel in 1861.
Title of 5th. Baronet Anstruther, of Wrae, Linlithgow on 18 October 1863.
Also of Balcaskie, Fife" and "of Breamore, Caithness".

He was educated at Eton College, Berk. He graduated from St.Andrews Univer sity with a honorary Doctor of Law [LL.D.].
He gained the rank of Captain in 1877 in the service of the Royal Engineer s, fighting in the Egyptian Campaign in 1883, in the Expedition to Bechuan aland in 1885, and fought in W.W.I, being awarded the decoration of the Le gion of Honour. Ha gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the servi ce of the 6th. Fifeshire, Volunteer, Royal Highlanders.
He succeeded to the title of 6th. Baronet Anstruther, of Wrae, co.Linlithg ow [N.S.,1694] on 21 July 1886, and from 1698, "of Balcaskie, co.Firth" a nd "of Breamore, Caithness".
He held the office of J.P. for Caithness, J.P. for Fife, was Honary Colon el of the 6th./7th. Battalion, Black Watch, and was Deputy Lieutenant of C aithness.
